As for those US destroyers...they were ALL sent to be intentionally destroyed by "the enemy" because their usefulness is way past their freshness dates. All of those destroyers, being attacked, have minimal crew onboard and they get an alert, when to leave, so they don't go down with the ship. Sinking them saves the American taxpayers a LOT of money. Although, one would think their steel would be worth salvaging, but...in reality, it may not be a money-saver. So, don't get fired up when another destroyer is attacked.
