I watched an interview with Phyllis Chesler on "American Thought Leaders" to get an alternative point of view to the conflict in the Middle East. Phyliss seemed blind to the situation with the people of Gaza and their current catastrophe. She completely took the Israel/Zionist point of view, believing all the stories about rape, etc. She draws her authority from her experience when as a young woman she married into an upper class Islamic family in Central Asia. Eventually she left that situation and has written all these books and given lots of lectures on the treatment of women in Islamic society. I think she is wrong in a lot of ways but I couldn’t find the right frame. It could be like going into the South in the U.S. in 1950s and discovering a prejudice society and that becomes fixed as a permanent state when things do change. But obviously I know nothing about this never having been to central Asia. Maybe that is more to the point, though, because as ignorant as I am so is the rest of the U.S. population so why should we be putting our military all over the place where we don’t belong (like Yemen) because we really do not understand. And probably Phillis doesn’t understand either. Yet what is obvious beyond all cultural differences is the suffering in front of our eyes, which has to stop.
Non-muslims did not pay the one/fortieth wealth tax annually known as zakat to the state coffers, out of which services, etc were financed.
