I remain dubious of excess mortality statistics, and no one has satisfactorily explained why I should not. I would rather see total deaths divided by the total estimated population (which is growing) expressed as a percentage for the last 50 years.
Smoking is protective, or at least at one point it was. Maybe the French smokers are both skinnier and have less availability of their Ace 2 receptors, or some such thing. The U.S. is fatter because we don't smoke as much. Still, if Igor's numbers are right, there barely is a difference.

I barely understand statistics but it looks to me as if the USA and France are about equal in terms of excess mortality. I assume FRA is France. The USA had (I guess of August 2022) a vaccine uptake of 65.48 and a booster uptake of 37.44 with an excess mortality of .081. Aren't .078 and .081 roughly equal. I know a marathon runner--super skinny--who has had covid four times (vaccinated) and a whole bunch of fatties that haven't even had it once.
