Actually there are several verses, and considering the order of revelation, it seems that the original Muslim community was weaned off of alcohol gradually rather than all at once. The last two basically say 1) that the harm is greater than the benefit, and 2) it's unclean and should be avoided (in strong terms). The latter is the usual justification for the complete alcohol ban.
I’ve read it as Strong drink. Although I agree you are best staying away from all but is having 2 glasses of wine at the weekend the same as a few whiskies,Gins,Vodkas etc. Also in Surah 2:219 it says there is some utility for men.
A very profound discussion on comparitive religions. From prophet Adam down to the last prophet Mohammed on whom be peace..the common thread of man's humanity to man is the theme.Claire I admire your search however u may discover more in Islam such that
rules and regulations have contextual roots.
Belief is a total process and a piecemeal approach may be paradoxical.Thx u guys for an interesting critical thinking execise.
Thank you Feizal, glad you like the discussion.
Surah 4:43 O you who believe! Draw not near to prayer when you are drunken, till you know that which you utter..
This doesn’t imply alcohol is forbidden.

As I sang in "Ballad of an Irish Muslim" https://www.unz.com/kbarrett/blitzed-in-which-i-am-viciously-attacked-by-an-irishman-from-bangladesh/#comment-3876136 :
Now there are two verses in the Qur'an concernin' alcohol
One of 'em says "don't drink too much"
The other says "don't drink atall"
One verse is fer the Irish and the other's fer the rest
And I'm too drunk to tell which is which, but I'm afraid that I can guess...
Can anyone give the verse where alcohol is forbidden in the Quran please
